As semen quality decreases, the precision of ovulation timing needs to increase. Ovulation timing precision is increased by more frequent progesterone levels and adding LH testing for the most compromised semen. Too few sperm, abnormal sperm, or poor motiligy may all result in poor fertility.
Sometimes this can be overcome by intrauterine insemination or multiple inseminations, but in other cases, the infertility may be too severe. Bitches whelp 65 days plus or minus one from the LH surge regardless of the day bred in the majority of breedings.
Therefore, the more accurately you pinpoint the LH surge the more accurately you can narrow down the whelping date. Large litters may come one to two days early and litters of one or two puppies may go one to two days late.
Bitches whelp in a fairly narrow window from LH surge. It is possible to plan a c-section date at the completion of the heat from the progesterone and LH values. In any bitch where a c-section is anticipated, it is highly recommended to perform a series of progesterone levels at the time of breeding.
