How long tile set before grout

As long as the tile surface is kept clean and debris is kept out of the seams between tiles, you can allow your mortar to cure for as long as you wish before grouting. Caution pays off. If your ceramic tile job seems damp or not fully set after 24 hours, wait longer before grouting. You will save yourself work by finishing the job right, rather than redoing a job ruined by uncured thinset mortar. Walking on a freshly laid tile floor will disturb your tile installation, cause the tile to pull free from the mortar, and result in loose tiles going forward.

Once you have tiled a floor, do not walk on it for at least 24 hours. Similar to avoiding foot traffic, do not expose uncured tile to water or other liquid. Thinset mortar is diluted in water. This amount of time allows the thinset mortar to fully cure and fuse to both the tiles and the floor. Applying grout too soon will stop the mortar curing process, leading tiles to pop loose from the floor or wall. Houzz Research. Shop Featured Holiday Categories.

Related Discussions Grout color in ceramic tile Q. Have you checked to see if the colour now is the same as the original grout powder? A coloured sealer is like a liquid latex paint of sorts. A massive pain in the ass to install and takes hours and hours to get right.

Mapei makes a load of them that I have used when a job goes South. I have only used the Aqua Mix sealer in the past.

I watched a product demo of the Mapei one at the Mapei training center last year and the presenter botched the demo. I'm told it works but have yet to test it or use it in the field. I have spend hours and hours and hours with the Aqua Mix with great results.

This is one chore you would not wish on your worst enemy. Make sure you practice on a sample board first. I have found doing all the grout joints North South and then all the grout joints East West to be the best system.

We always seal the tile and grout in any installation. Sometimes the tile is sealed prior to grouting and then again when the grout is sealed. There are numerous sealers available, some as sheen, some as penetrating and matte finish.

I am getting ready to have 6x24 wood-look porcelain tile installed. Have done a lot of research, looked up the TCNA standards and explanation of the various reasons why it should be a certain grout line width and how to reduce lippage. That said, I think the floor that ASI Renovations laid looks beautiful and you can come lay a floor in our house anytime. Sophie, I understand what you are saying Yes, they should have had the customer sign off. Here is my other thought: If you are so set on wood-look flooring install wood!

You have to respect, install and treat it accordingly. At least you get the wood look, but it is tile. I will make sure our installer spends the necessary time on making sure the subfloor and cement boards are properly prepared. We have renovated 3 houses. First house: I told the contractor what needed to be done; second: I decided what all needed to be done, researched, selected and bought the materials and did some myself.

The house we are living in, I designed, selected, purchased the material and hired the contractor to do the job according to my instructions. I make sure to inform myself about all aspects of any work on our houses. No one can know everything. This includes contractors. Some are more knowledgeable about one thing, others about something else. Why do you need to wait longer when installing porcelain over Ditra?

I'm considering using Ditra and porcelain tiles for my Master Bath floor. Hi Greg, Both Ditra and Porcelain tiles are impervious and allow no air to pass through. Therefore the thin set has to cure by hydration alone, and a lot of polymer thin sets need air to firm up properly.

The only air that will get in is through the open grout joints. Fill them in prematurely, and the thin set might not set up properly. For this reason Schluter recommends using a quality dry set mortar to install the porcelain tiles. Dry sets require no air in order to set up.

I have also used Versa Bond, which is sold at Home Depot. Versa Bond is a modified thin set, but it doesn't have a high polymer count. It works pretty much like a dry set. You can grout it the next day. Oh Greg, please make you link mucho smaller. Find More Posts by John Bridge. Whoops, sorry about the signature size there John. Should be better now. I've read your recommendations on Versa Bond before, so I was planning on using that regardless.

Good to know it will work similar to the Dry Set. Interesting that Porcelain does not allow air to pass through. The girl at the tile store couldn't give us a good explaination of the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles, just that porcelain is tougher and more resistant to chipping. We picked it more because we liked the color than for any other reason. Hey Greg, I have a ceramic background and I can tell you that a porcelain clay body is made with a finer grain clay combined with silica and fluxes than earthenware and stoneware bodies ceramic tile.
